Not That Long Ago

we were children 

and

we believed in the portability

 of a pet dragon.

A ballerina fish didn't just

swim  

but rather

slid through melodious

liquid silver


in a frilled gown.

But we shed our feathers


and trade them in  


for feet


bound toward

solid, earthy ambitions.

in the early morning hours
