Body Part

In the center of Antibes France

is

a toy shop

where wonderment still shines

through

years-stained

windows

les dames d'abord

and

tear-stained eyes.

Hers

was a face that time forgot

but

I'll never forget

Madame Langlais -

I'd frequent her shop

to admire her collection of German toys

 until one day

She offered me a chair

we

took a cup of tea

les dames d'abord

and we talked.

les dames d'abord

She wept. She wept

 because

she could

see

someone listening.

This was before the keypad

would

become a new

body part.

This was when

you could

hear

someone else

les dames d'abord

But now

it's the tip of our fingers

that listen

and rather than meet

at the windows

of

our attention to the world

we click the alphabet

to

a new rhythm

to

a new heartbeat

piloting a device

from which we pop in and out

of

another person's important place.

But tell me.

If

the day ever comes

when you finally

talk

on the phone

with

a keypad friend

can you

les dames d'abord

Anita, that little dog is so sweet hehehe. I'm glad to hear you'll be using your own photos, and how delightful they are. I've been checking on your instagram now and then. Yes, communication is so nice, and I wanted to call you before school started, but did it start for you already? Jess' school started today, and the first day was a bit stressful. I love this picture of the blue book and the flowers, so pretty. And this toy shop - I'd love to see it in person! I think it's so much more special to talk in person, cause YES, then you can see her eyes. And I am hoping the day comes when I can meet you in person, my dear friend. Until then, I guess it's just at the click of our fingertips.

love you,
~Sheri

Beautifully written and really makes me stop to ponder. This modern keyboard world or worse yet, swiping the keypad, is not teaching us to really communicate with others. I still like to snail mail cards, lettters and postcards around the world. I am not much for talking on the phone and do not even own a smart phone. I suppose I am old fashioned and it suits me just fine. Creative Writing Bliss Dear...

Dearest Anita,
This post evokes such tenderness in my heart for the treasured friendships I am fortunate to have. Both old and new and of course one of those new precious friendships is you! On our recent visit, I did hear your eyes and your melodic, warm and nurturing voice. I am so pleased that you are sharing your photographs on your blog as your eye for light, color and feeling come alive, especially when you combine them with your thoughtful words. So thankful that your first day back in the classroom went so well. Sending you much love and caring thoughts for a good week.

Oh Anita. You have made me cry. :) How do you do it? This gift of yours for translating your thoughts and ideas into soul-speak.
I am blessed, truly blessed to have magical eye-to-eyes with you, dearest friend. Not as often as we would like, of course, but we'll take what we can. :)

This is so moving and very beautiful...I love learning something new about you. Would love to hear more about your time with Mme. Langlais.
That sweet doggie is adorable, and your photos here are brilliant.
It is bittersweet to meet such dear souls from all over the world, but only to know them through our keyboards. The lucky few will have a chance to "hear their eyes".
This would be a wonderful addition to "memoirs"... :)
LOVE YOU.

So true Anita, and what WE knew continues to change. Our communication is missing the most essential part and that is what is human. The eyes, the voice, and all the gestures that come with our words. How wonderful that you stumbled across this store and had the opportunity to listen and SEE. Such beautiful finds and I am glad you brought something back. Wonderful post Anita!

Junkchiccottage said...

So wonderfully written Anita. Sometimes internet friends can be a blessing and an opportunity that would not have been but still at the same time it is a curse that we only can communicate with a beautiful new friend through the keyboard. Great post Anita.

Anita, your words ring true. Amazing how the keyboard has taken our voices of communication. I feel sad in many aspects of this reality. I love the hand written note or the chat across the table with a friend. The instant voice of the keyboard does offer the immediate connection. Interesting words for one to ponder, Anita. I always feel inspired after reading your words, and your photos are stunning. Bravo!

Good Morning my dear keypad friend! The tips of our fingers listen but they also feel and I feel your love and goodness each time we communicate. I’m sure it’s possible to hear someone’s eyes on the telephone you just have to listen a little harder.
I adore your sweet little dog – he looks as if he is listening. Have a happy day xxx

Hi Anita, Thank you for expressing my thoughts on "the keypad" and the alienation that it has enabled. Nothing can equal sitting with a good friend to listen to her and for you to be listened to. The beauty of intimacy. Hope that you are all set for the new school year. xoxo Mary

I have such mixed feeling about social media and our devices.

I am guilty of using my iPad and iPhone to read books despite the fact that I love the feel of a book.

And, I miss the human contact of social media.

But, if not for social media, I would not know you. I do know that one day we will sit across the table from one another and chat and it will be wonderful.

Méa Strauß said...

Oh Anita, so true. And media should be seen as a widening, not a substitute or narrowing (oops, I guesss, there is no such word in English? But you will know :))
The doggie is sooo cute. I imagine it wiggeling its tail.
So I hug you, go back to the mice theatre, there is one more post about basic bread and then the story will come to you :)

Dear Anita, yes, I do believe we can hear the eyes through the voice. In our world of high tech, so much has gone away too. It is a joy and blessing to listen to the highs and lows in the voice of a friend. Having the opportunity to communicate, in which now seems like an old fashion idea to talk on the phone, is thrilling. This post is beautiful and filled with inspiring words and visions. Love the darling toy shop and the sweet bear is precious.
So glad you had a beautiful start to the new school year. Wishing you many blessings.

It is so true, and so sad. This next generation coming of age has no idea how to talk to people. Everything is eyes down, texting, facebook. How sad for them, and for everyone else. What are they missing in the people and scenery around them? A lot I would guess. Your photos are wonderful. You are obviously a fast learner in the photography world. But, you entered into it knowing what you wanted them to look like. That helps to have the vision already. Me, I'm just getting it figured out what my vision is.

Lovely Anita. I want that pup! So sweet. I watch my children begin and carry on their first loves via technology. Where is the hand holding, the eye contact, the sweet smell of another? It's all been replaced by selfies and emojis. Connecting face to face is a lost joy, I'm afraid. I hope it comes back.

Karen said...

Dear sweet Anita, so true. I wouldn't have come to know you and several other "blog" friends if we didn't have this method of "talking things over". Still, I treasure my dear friends that I have grown old with and they become even more important as my adventure continues. Maybe balance is the solution to this new found tool for speaking.
I love your photographs, you have done such a beautiful job communicating with us through music and images.

I'm still thinking about your post and the comments. A thought, an incomplete one, popped into my head about mail communication in the past after reading Kim's comment about first loves via technology. My memory fails me, but wasn't there a well-known poetic couple who had a life-long love via mail?

What a touching poem ( and gorgeous images !), my darling Anita, about the alienation which we do live today with the means which are making, probably, our life easier and above all, faster to live, but nothing may be compared with a good talk with a friend face to face, looking at him/her into his/her eyes, this warmth cannot be compensated by anything else !
Thanks to your sweet and delicate soul, my blessed, precious friend, have a wonderful day

Although there are many advantages to technology and it is so good to make friends with so many others around the world, nothing beats the human contact of talking face to face, thank you for reminding us of this. The toy shops looks wonderful the pictures of the dolls remind me of ones that my daughter and I have owned. Sarah x

Mindy said...

So beautifully written. There is nothing like looking into someones eyes. I use technology and there are benefits but it also robs us of face to face time, time that nothing else can replace. A wonderful shop you visited. It makes me think of (and miss oh, so much) my Grandmother who collected dolls.

Exactly.... what a poignant post. We are losing one on one human interaction... it's funny how quickly i have been drawn into it all even at 61 years old.
I learned about your beautiful blog from Dore Calloway from Burlap Luxe. I have been wanting to do a painting for her for the longest time, and have been looking for an inspiration photo to paint from. She told me that on or near your header you had a wonderful photo of some sheep in the distance grazing by the sea. I don't see it in your current beautiful header. Do you still have that photo? I'd love to take a look, if you don't mind.

Anita, I could not agree more! I am a phone call and letter writer and I love to receive mail form my family and friends. I feel living so far from them that it is like a gift.

This week I have to tell you though that after the loss of my little Munchen the outpouring from blog/facebook/instagram friends, yourself included, was a balm to my broken heart. It was so wonderful to know that there were people whom I have never met, that could feel my pain, that felt sad along with me and for me and offered their kind words, love, prayers and support. It was a generous and wonderful thing for me.

Thanks for checking on me this week my friend, it means so very much. I hope that you have a fabulous week.

Well, I really, really love the fact that the keyboard helps us meet friends that are sometimes very, very far away... as long as it doesn't prevent us from talking to our friends who are a lot nearer!

This brought to mind the chat I had with another woman in a vintage shop I visited recently. We began talking about the hats we were viewing and she began to share .... her husband died a few months ago and she is now learning how to go on without him. she was older, and so obviously lonely. Yet she had ventured out to peruse the lovely treasures ~ but connecting to another human being who would listen was the thing that was needed most this day, so we chatted and I looked into her teary eyes.....

Oh Anita, I am so thankful for the connection our keyboard friendship has given us.... to become friends of the heart.

There is something beautiful about a conversation face to face with someone, it is real...

Your images were lovely, as you are.

Here I am Anita, I had only access to my Ipad and with that being said when I would go to your site it would load your large foto's and shut me down, and then I would lose you...funny how that sounds lose you? much like communications get lost in how we write, or trying to read between the lines of how one feels while writting...is there a tone of sadness in the writing due to a misfortunate lack of communication due to writing over voices? its all guess work, and sometimes its up to us to read between the lines.

Your post was enlightening, I so remember sitting by the phone for a special phone call...sometimes for days awaiting that call...no more days get by, we have a cell phone glued to our hands, a computer desk top, a note book, Ipad, Iphones with internet access, nothing is out of reach these days EXCEPT for not including EYE-TO-EYE contact, we have seemed to have lost this somehow excepting all that modern tech forces upon us?

être d'accord..."Eye-to-eye" so mant translations to this meaning negative and positive all in how we look at it?

So nice that you were able to add a bit of eye love to your friendship, and that moe haired puppy is all the cutest, and to be able to make a purchase from a friend that dear contact EYE-TO-EYE ! makes it that much more memorable... a positive interaction with awareness to a face.

Perhaps, if not for the key pad, we would not have blogging as we know it to be, friendships would not form, and heartfelt stories could not be told to the many who READ and RESPOND reading between the lines and putting a face to its poetic words.
Friendships seen through the eyes of a key pad never replace face to face, but sometimes its a close second :)

See you soon, or should I bid this will be here to read you soon?

Lovely post, endearing friendships are treasured.

I think you can Anita! I met several blog friends over the years and when we meet it's just as if we have met before/ known each other for a long time, which we have off course. I think that when you write from the heart, show who you really are on your blog, it will be this way.

Hope we will be able to meet one day Anita. It would be a joy!

Have a lovely day!

Sigh... I love having the internet to "meet" friends, like you, but there is an underlying sadness in me that hates it in the way that it makes everything so impersonal. Everyone, accept for me, is attached to their phones these days and it's so hard to get anyone's attention long enough to look into their eyes. This post made me long for the days of the past more than I do already. Not to say that I didn't enjoy it. It's beautiful... your words, the music..., but it's bittersweet. Oh to talk to someone without distractions... how lovely would that be?

xoxo,
rue

Having found you on Instagram, I have now found your beautiful blog...

Because of all the techy things, I think it is very hard to hold the eyes/attention of people we actually do talk to. Everyone's attention is constantly being enticed off... Hither and yon... To all the techy places...

I do not have a wide circle, by any means. But it seems to me, that fully attention, is hard come by, today. And I am guilty also, even though I only blog and IG.

It is more than sad. It is scary. What of the children now, growing up in this multi-tech world? Will they forget how to converse? As they are now forgetting (not being taught), how to write cursive?

-sigh-

Gentle hugs,
Tessa

Sorry.... That should read "...that full attention..."... Not "...that fully attention..."

Absolutely beautifully inscribed by your keyboard and straight from your heart...as the soul shines through enough to feel the essence of your penned words.
I have touched the sands of Time with emails and friends I have engaged miraculous contact with over the internet especially linked to the spiritual realm. This is where we are at with the instant connection we are able to have with those whom we may never meet face to face, but we share that oneness and divineness with our thoughts which spans time and space, and our thoughts and beings are melded together as one.
The Divine Nature is Timeless and reaches into Eternity.
thank you for sharing this sweet, priceless memory you had in France.
always, warm hugs and love in that special place in our hearts linked to our Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Oh! And I adore the header too! the contrasts of color, the purple and the dried orange shade of the sunflowers, with the black seed pod centers...an artist's delight to the eye! Richness of color comes from the rarest of demise of flowers.

Bonjour Anita,

Merci.

Je vous embrasse,

Marie-Paule

"Keypad as a new body part", oh how true, how true! Anita, you just hit it out of the park every darn time> Nothing compares to face to face, voice to voice communication... like in the old days before the tech world took over. But alas, this is where we are, and how we reach out and meet and become friends...unless we are fortunate enough to meet in person and smile across the table sipping tea. What a wonderful little doggie you bought from the wonderful toy shop.

Oh oui ma belle, I could hear your eyes clearly! They were smiling and sparkling and full of love for mankind. These words you created with your fingertips drew tears from my eyes. So profound, so true. Sending you lots of love and blessings mon amie! Edie Marie

Hugs for a great week!

So beautiful! Yes!! Friends still need to spend tons of time together. I am blessed with such friends, and we now bring our adult children and their children along, and it is the highlight of our lives. We have cried several times over the tender feelings we have of spreading that love to new generations. It is especially touching when one of my little ones tells my friends that she love them! Be still my heart!!
