After a phone call from the lab
reporting a "suspicion of cancer"
we
laughed at the silly stories we tell each
looked out the frosty kitchen window
to admire
the ordinary finch pecking at the dead flowers
in the broken pots
and we looked up into the black canvas
of night
to discover that
the stars were
ours.
